VERY interesting read, thanks for all the hard work Elmer!

Never knew SE surprised jp players with mixed servers. It does seem like it would have been better to have separate servers with the option of playing on a mixed server (seems like it would still be feasible with the server transfer option). The cultural divide has been mostly a negative for both sides it seems. Not at all shocked by jp response to na players tho, both cultures do things very very differently.

Best quote was about when na players first joined: "I was surprised at all the begging." LOL

Would love for SE to see this, and get some input and response.

Anyways, another vote for a continued dialogue - best thing I've read about FFXI in a loooong time.

It makes me feel good. I also try my best to chat in simple English.
I like that, because I feel the same if a JP tries to communicate with me in English.

    Awesome job.

I laughed when I read how some guy called that JP a "monkey" on NA release.

Had a lot of fun reading this. Kind of want to sig some of this, but I'm going to hold back.

I think the one big difference between NA and JP is the most common mindset of a new player. I've never seen a JP player beg in me in tell(well /tell me randomly, so I'd assume the same thing), but I'd be lying if NA players didn't do it. I don't see it much anymore, so it is probably something only found with FFXI was a hot topic.

Everything else is shit is situational.

It's funny, I was actually more excited to find out what the answers to all our questions were than I am about square-enix's update notes.

Wow. This answer, of all answers to all questions, is the one that bothers me the most. A case of "the pot calling the kettle black" as the old phrase goes. A quick look at any of the answers within Elmer's report clearly shows that a majority of Japanese players (much like the NA players of which they speak, of course) very much think of their own needs first and would prefer if they didn't have to think of others. All this proves, really, is that they're as misguided as nearly everyone else is, including the people(s) of whom they speak, when it comes to multicultural communication.

That said, I'm definitely happy to hear that they do appreciate it when I use my lolRomanji to communicate with them where the auto-translate function is, shall we say, "limited".

Thanks for taking the time to do this Elmer, much appreciated. Something I'd always wished to do if I were fluent in Japanese. To be quite honest, I'd like to see this kind of things continue, perhaps on a yearly basis to gauge the level of understanding between the two most-differing communities within FFXI.

Very entertaining read, I don't play anymore but I would have loved this during the years I did. I would always try to communicate in japanese when making parties a long, long time ago back when finding NA to party with was hard. If I remember right I did a simple "pt ni haitemo ii" or something like that, I had a whole bunch of stuff I'd found online to help me and the response was always a little OK^^ or something to that effect as opposed to ignoring me or just outright saying no. I guess the reason was because they were impressed or something.

I third the vote to have them submit questions for the players here to answer. That'd be really interesting.

edit: What the fuck is ultramarine, srsly.

OMG thank you Elmer, now I finally know. I really appreciate what you did for us and the game.

Thanks for using my question and I hope to see more communication between non-jps and our jp friends ^^

Interesting how many people just want to abandon everything to get away from NA players

"I don’t know. I would like to know what they find rude."

Definately we should answer questions for them!

on the website thing, I noticed alot signup... they just don't ever say anything. I've only had 1-2 post stuff up though which is nice especially since its near impossible to get a FFXI doujin from japan!

Wonder jsut how much something like google helps them singup... O_o
    Or on forums like here
    http://unkar.jp/read/live27.2ch.net/ogame/1213230993/

Melees, please come to merit parties as sub-NIN, not sub-SAM. This is something I really want <[ NA ]> to understand. It makes me feel bad for <[ NA ]> healers. Using sub-NIN will make you super efficient. Your death-rate will go way down. Using Utsusemi will save your healers a lot of <[ MP ]>. Japanese don’t see <[ MP ]> as something that should be sacrificed to make you stronger.
    I couldn't agree more.

There are some hilarious answers there, hahahaha.

E.Body is so full of win that they had to come up with a new color name for it.
